Types of Sedation We Offer at Touchstone Dentistry
Posted on March 27th, 2026
You know that feeling. You’re sitting in the car outside the dental office, stomach in knots, hands gripping the steering wheel, considering if you should just reschedule (again).
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. At Touchstone Dentistry in League City, we see many patients who feel anxious or very nervous at the thought of dental work. Whatever the reason for this, we believe fear should never keep someone from getting the care they need.
This is why we provide sedation for dental anxiety relief. Sedation can build a bridge between anxious patients and the confidence to care for their oral health.
Understanding Dental Anxiety
Dental anxiety isn’t a quirk, but a real physiological response. For some, it stems from a past experience. For others, it’s a sense of vulnerability from lying back in a chair surrounded by unfamiliar noises and metal instruments. And for many, it’s the fear of judgment, especially if it’s been years since their last cleaning.
At Touchstone Dentistry, we don’t just recognize dental anxiety; we plan for it. That means creating a space where you’re heard, informed, and treated like a person, not a chart. From your very first visit, we aim to replace fear with familiarity.
“Anxiety is something we can work through together,” says Dr. Kunjumon, DDS. “In fact, we’ve seen patients who once needed sedation eventually feel so at ease that they no longer ask for it.”
When anxiety is high, even a routine cleaning can feel overwhelming. Sedation offers a path forward. It doesn’t “knock you out” (unless it’s IV sedation, which we can refer you out for), but it does help you feel calm, relaxed, and sometimes a little like you’ve just woken from a nap.
Sedation can be especially helpful if you:
Avoid the dentist due to fear or past trauma
Have a strong gag reflex or difficulty getting numb
Need a long or complex procedure
Have sensitive teeth or trouble sitting still for long periods
By easing the physical and emotional stress of treatment, sedation may allow us to work more efficiently and help you have a more positive experience, which can build your confidence for next time.
Not every patient needs the same approach, so we offer various types of sedation ranging from light to moderate. We’ll consult with you to determine the most appropriate course of action.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
This is the lightest and most commonly used form of sedation. Administered through a small mask over your nose, nitrous oxide is intended to help you feel calm and comfortable during your appointment. The effects kick in quickly and wear off within minutes after the gas is turned off, so you can drive yourself home and resume your day as normal.
It’s a great option for patients who want to take the edge off but remain awake and aware during treatment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
If your anxiety is more intense or if you’re having a longer procedure, oral conscious sedation may be recommended. This involves taking a prescribed medication about an hour before your appointment. You’ll feel drowsy, deeply relaxed, and may not remember much of the procedure, but you’ll still be responsive and able to answer questions.
With oral conscious sedation, you’ll need someone to drive you home. Most patients report feeling like the appointment went by in a blur (and many say it’s the easiest dental visit they’ve ever had).
IV Sedation (Referral-Based)
For patients with severe anxiety, complex dental needs, or who simply want to be “asleep” for their procedure, IV sedation is available through trusted referral partners in League City. While not performed onsite, we work closely with specialists to coordinate care and make sure your experience is smooth and from start to finish.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Sedation?
If you’ve ever postponed dental care because of fear, discomfort, or difficulty sitting through procedures, you might be a great candidate for sedation. The right type depends on your health history, level of anxiety, and what treatment you need.
During your consultation, Dr. Kunjumon will walk through your medical background and discuss your concerns to help determine the safest and most effective sedation option for you.
“We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all dentistry,” Dr. Kunjumon explains. “We take the time to understand each patient’s story so we can create a plan that actually works for them.”
